UK approves $133M deal for five new dorms

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's being called the largest expansion of housing in the university's history.

The University of Kentucky has approved a multi-million dollar deal to allow new dorms to be built on campus.

The UK Board of Trustees signed off on the deal Sunday.

A private developer, Education Realty Trust (EDR), will build and manage five new residence halls, creating more than 2,300 new beds.

Construction is set to begin in November.

Crews will demolish the old Wildcat Lodge and Haggin Hall to make room for two of the new dorms.

Work has already begun on a new dorm across from W.T. Young Library. That dorm is scheduled to open in August 2013.

The university's long-term goal is to have accomodations for 9,000 undergrad students on campus.
