It was a day that changed the lives of 50 families forever. On August 27, 2006 Comair Flight 5191 took off from Blue Grass Airport. Just seconds later, it crashed killing all but one person on board.
This Saturday, family members of victims and members of the community will come together to remember the victims and honor them with the unveiling of a new memorial.
The service, which is open to the public, begins at 10a.m. Saturday at the UK Arboretum. The service will include remarks from family members of some of the victims.
Following the service, the 5191 Memorial Commission will unveil a special memorial statue built in honor of the victims. Each victim's family was able to put a memento in a small tube that will be placed inside one of the 49 birds in the memorial.
Members of the public who plan to attend the service need to bring a chair with them. Chairs are only being provided for the family member of victims and special guests in attendance.
Public parking will be off of Alumni Drive, behind the UK Commonwealth Stadium. The designated parking area will be well marked. Buses will be available to then take people to the Arboretum, and then back to the parking lots once the service concludes.
