Chamber of Commerce starts "Shop Local" campaign for Christmas

The countdown to Christmas is on and some local officials want you to shop at home.
The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce is starting the annual "Shop Local" campaign to boost the economy and increase tax dollars.

David Hefner says Christmas sales are up so far this year at his jewelry store in Pikeville.
"We're pleased the holiday season has started off very well. We're looking forward to a strong Christmas season this year," he said.

The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce wants all local businesses to have a strong Christmas season.
Leaders are asking people to "Shop Local" instead of driving to another city or state.

"There are deals here in eastern Kentucky with great businesses here in eastern Kentucky with great products and service," said Brad Hall.

"Being a mom and pop store, family business, we strongly recommend and appreciate hometown business," said Hefner.

Hefner says each dollar spent in his store leads to local jobs which helps provide for eastern Kentucky families.

Chamber of Commerce officials say shopping local not only helps local stores, but it also helps the economy for the entire region.

"For every one dollar spend locally, that dollar will turn over at least five times in the community. Those dollars come right back here and help us maintain roads, bridges, and create new and great things for the area," said Hall.

"Being a hometown business and all local employees, our money doesn't leave eastern Kentucky, it stays right here," says Hefner.

To entice shoppers, local businesses are posting coupons on the website www.shopeastky.com.

Chamber of Commerce officials say new businesses are adding coupons each day to the website.
