Changes to Bell County Schools music programs

BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Changes are coming to Bell County Schools music programs.

Bell County school officials are eliminating the high school marching band but starting new elementary music programs.

The superintendent say they do not have enough students for a marching band but will still have a pep band and students will still have a band class during school.

They are also starting music classes for all elementary students in hopes it will lead to more students joining band in high school.

"Having a strong feeder program is going to be essential to ever producing a marching field band where we can be competitive in that area," said Yvonne Gilliam.

She says they hope to bring back a marching band again in a few years if more students participate.

The School Board is hiring a certified music teacher for the elementary music classes next school year. Students will have piano lessons and chorus lessons.
