HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - One of the perks of donating items to a local charity is being able to write it off on your taxes, and people were rushing to the Goodwill store to get their donations in before the January 31st deadline.
“We looked at our calendar last night and thought oh goodness so we both started digging through our closets and got everything organized,” said Sherri Craft.
Monday was the last day to use any donation as a tax write-off in 2012, and Goodwill officials said a lot of people have waited until the last minute.
“We meant to have gotten these things in here earlier but we did an “oops” and we did get it here before the final day of the year,” said Craft.
As the new year gets closer, they said donation numbers increase.
“We went the other day from a normal 30 something a day of donations to 72,” said Center Manager Ronnie Mcintyre.
They said there has been a nearly 50 percent increase in donations within the past week, and have had to bring in extra help.
“It can get a little overwhelming for a couple people,” said Mcintyre.
So no matter what people are bringing, they still have time before they ring in the new year.
