A family mourns the death of a young girl while her little brother fights for his life. The children were badly injured in a car crash Saturday afternoon at US-150 and Maretburg Road in Rockcastle County.
Seven-year-old Jada Hayes died at UK Hospital from multiple blunt force trauma as a result of injuries sustained in Saturday's crash..
Kentucky State Police say 23-year-old Jody Hayes of Brodhead was driving westbound Saturday afternoon along US-150 when she made a left turn toward Maretburg Road into the path of another car traveling eastbound.
Following the crash the driver and passenger of that eastbound car were both taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released, but those in Hayes' car were in much worse shape.
Although Jody Hayes was not injured in the crash, her boyfriend 29-year-old Tony Hayes of Mount Vernon, who was sitting in the front seat, was treated and released from Rockcastle County Hospital.
Jody's three-year-old daughter Madison Hayes who was restrained in a child safety seat was also treated and released from the same hospital.
Tony's two children seven-year-old Jada and five-year-old Malachi, who were not restrained, received the worst injuries and were both airlifted to UK Hospital.
Since then, a Facebook page set up by friends calling for prayers for the two children has received responses from hundreds of well-wishers. Those close to the family declined to comment on camera, but they're hopeful the support continues for the family at a time when they need it most.
At last check, Malachi Hayes was listed in critical condition.
State police say they are investigating the crash. They do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role and do not expect to file any charges.
