Churches unite to serve Thanksgiving dinner

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Bowman Memorial and Lothair United Methodist Churches joined forces Thursday to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the community. People we talked to say the goal was to provide a measure of comfort to folks who are suffering this holiday season.

On a day when most people will be with loved ones, sharing a traditional meal, the church's pastor says not everyone is so fortunate.

"There are folks in our community, who on Thanksgiving Day are going to be lonely. This is just another day of being alone for them, and there are some who are not going to have a turkey, ham, dressing," said pastor Jeffrey Lambert.

That's why, parishioners say, the church has been providing a Thanksgiving meal for the past 15 years.

"The church is here for them, and we're here any time they need us, especially on Thanksgiving Day, but we're here every day for them," said church member Judy Couch, who organized the dinner.

Volunteers served up turkey and all the trimmings to folks who stopped by the church Thursday. On top of that, they sent out dozens of boxes of food to folks in need all across the community. They say wherever people are this Thanksgiving, they want them to know that someone cares.

"It's amazing what a kind word, a hand on a shoulder or a meal on a plate can really mean for them this time of year," said Lambert.

Volunteers say the opportunity to serve was a blessing, and they could not have imagined spending Thanksgiving anywhere else. Church members say they served more than 120 meals, which included six turkeys and four hams.
