City of Cumberland looking for mayor

There is still no mayor in the city of Cumberland in Harlan County.

Mayor Carl Hatfield resigned this week and the City Council has not appointed a new one yet.

Carl Hatfield is now working full-time in his sign shop in Cumberland.

"It was a very hard decision," said Hatfield.

Hatfield resigned as mayor of Cumberland once before this year and returned. He says this time he has no plans of returning to office.

He says he resigned because of constant conflict with City Council.

"No one person should stand in the way of progress and under these circumstances, it is better I step down to allow council to appoint someone they can work with," said Hatfield.

We tried contacting the seven council members and could only reach council member Charles Raleigh. He says he supports the mayor's resignation.

"I think it will be a positive thing for Cumberland, and we just have to move forward," Raleigh said.

Raleigh says the city clerk will run the city hall office until a new mayor is appointed. The clerk does not know when a new mayor will be appointed.

"I hope we get a mayor soon," said Irvin Boggs.

Irvin Boggs has lived in Cumberland his whole life and wants to see the new mayor and city council make progress in town.

"I hope they work together," said Boggs.

Hatfield says although he is out of public office, he will still work to improve Cumberland.

Raleigh said he hopes they can appoint a new mayor soon so city business will not get delayed.
