The mayor of Manchester says he asked for Fire Chief Jamey Mills' resignation.

Mayor George Saylor called a meeting with the fire department after some recent controversy.

After the meeting started, the mayor says there was a traffic accident so the firefighters responded and did not return.

We were unable to reach Mills to ask him about the call to resign.

He told us earlier his department is taking a 30 day leave of absence, but they still plan on responding to calls.

Mills says they will not be around the fire department as much for everyday maintenance.

The fire chief in Manchester says his department is taking a 30 day leave of absence.

Manchester Mayor George Saylor said the fire department was responding to too many calls, and he also declined their request for a paid firefighter position because the city can not afford it.

Manchester Fire Chief Jamey Mills says after hearing of a possible new policy that the fire department would not be paged out on calls as the same time as other first responders, he felt the department was not respected by city hall.

Mills says this is not a strike, and they still plan on serving their community.

"In our bylaws, that does not mean they will not respond to calls. Everyone still has there radios and their pagers and keys to the department, and they are ready to answer the call," said Chief Mills.

Chief Mills says this does mean they will not be around the fire department as much or do extra maintenance.

Mayor Saylor called a meeting Thursday night with the fire department.

After the meeting started, the firefighters responded to a wreck, and the mayor says they did not come back.

Mayor Saylor said he asked in writing for the Chief Mill's resignation, but the mayor says Mills has not resigned.
