Civic activist dies at 73

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - A civic activist who promoted education in southeastern Kentucky has died.

Joanne Thompson James lived in London for nearly 40 years.

The Lexington Herald reports James became the founding chairwoman of Forward in the Fifth in 1986.

The group was established to improve schools in the fifth congressional district.

James also served on several boards and held other posts.

Her visitation will be Wednesday at 6pm and Thursday from 10am until a memorial service at 1pm at the London Funeral Home.

Joanne Thompson James was 73.
