Clay County magistrate stabs wife then kills himself

Police say they had never been called to the Lyttle home for any kind of domestic compliant..and now they’re trying to figure out what went horribly wrong in what many are calling a wonderful family.

“Everyone in our community thought the world of 'Jimbo,'” said Clay County Judge-Executive Joe Asher.

Lyttle, 51, was a native of Clay County…and was serving his first term as magistrate. But he also ran his own business…a local tobacco store….and worked for the local school system.

“I guess you can say meetings with him, he was the life of the party, so to say, he would keep us going,” said Asher of the interactions with Lyttle at Fiscal Court meetings.

But something happened between Lyttle and his 47 year old wife, Sharon. She called 911 just after 6 a.m. Wednesday saying at first she fell and stabbed herself. But once EMT’s arrived they called police because they were told Mr. Lyttle stabbed her.

“I thought they were happy all the time. Happy and smiling, being nice to people,” said neighbor Gilbert Spurlock.

The first officer on the scene met Lyttle in the driveway who again said his wife fell. The officer went inside the house and moments later heard a gunshot from inside a nearby garage. Lyttle was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead.

‘You know my heart sinks for the family. Being a tight knit community and all..prayers go out for them,” said Manchester Police Chief Chris Fultz.

“We had some people talk to him as late as yesterday afternoon, and everything seemed to be well,” said Asher.

Sharon Lyttle was airlifted to UK hospital for treatment of what police called multiple stab wounds.

Police say their investigation is trying to figure out what the source of any conflict was between the two that caused the violence.
