There have been a lot of these meetings recently in eastern Kentucky.

Many area post offices are in danger of closing down.

Most recently, the Closplint Community has learned their post office may soon be no more.

Dozens of people signed petitions Thursday night.

"The Closplint Post Office is being proposed for closure," said a post office representative.

This announcement has many people upset.

"After a post office is closed, a community loses its identity. It's zip code is gone," says Carolyn Alred who lives in Closplint.

"It says here describe here any favorable or unfavorable effects. To me there are a lot of unfavorable and no favorable effects," said one resident at the meeting.

They're worried about driving to Evarts to send and get their mail especially during the Winter. But, post office officials say with the Internet, the number of trips can be reduced.

"How many people here have computers and pay their bills online?" said Alred.

Despite their concerns, there are some issues that U.S. Post Office officials can't ignore.

"They look at a couple of factors: work load, revenue and customer demand," said a post office representative.

But that's not comforting for those who will have to make the long drive just to get their mail.

"I don't want to go all the way to Evarts to get my mail," said one woman through tears.

This community plans to fight together to make sure they keep a symbol of their community.

The Closplint Post Office closure is only being proposed right now, no decisions have been made.
