Coal miners sign-up for unemployment benefits

Updated: Mon 10:17 PM, Dec 10, 2012

HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Dozens of recently laid off coal miners were filing for unemployment Monday morning.

This comes after TECO Coal laid off more than 150 miners on Friday from Perry County Coal.

Miners say they are not sure what the future holds in the coal industry.

Ricky Napier was just laid off Friday, and now he worries how he will take care of his family.

"It's not gonna be very good because not only TECO has laid off, lots of other companies has laid off, and we have a bad economy in general," said Napier.

James Ford was laid off in August, but says finding a job has not been easy.

"I've looked around everywhere and put applications in, but nobody is hiring. They are laying off instead of hiring," said Ford.

Miners say they are uncertain of whether the coal market will rebound.
