PIKEVILLE, ky (WYMT) - Thousands of people are expected to line up along US-23 and hwy 119 for the united for coal hands across Pike County rally.
Boxes are being moved and plans are being finalized for the United for Coal Hands Across the Nation rally.
Organizers say it will place Pikeville and the coal industry in the national spotlight.
“Once the spotlight's on Pikeville it's going to be positive because you can see what it's done for us here in Pikeville,” said Commissioner Barry Chaney.
Organizers say they want to show why coal is so important to our country.
“We've been singled out as an industry that's been fought against by the EPA and MSHA and we just want our country to see how many people this effects,” said organizer Jesse Salyer.
The lineup that organizers have planned makes a giant "T" with the intersecting point being at the intersection of hwy 119 and US-23 in Pikeville.
Officials are expecting thousands of people to join hands in support from state to state.
“We’ve had unanimous support from miners in Texas and then Wyoming, that's been the other state that's emphatically been involved and then Pennsylvania of course and WV and VA of course,” said Jesse Bowling with Pikeville Tourism.
With each in attendance, they hope this time their voices will be heard.
The lineup along the highway is from 2p.m. to 3p.m. and the rally will follow after that.
