Coal Miners' Appreciation Week in KY

Today kicks off Coal Miners' Appreciation Week in Kentucky.

State Representative Rick Nelson sponsored the bill that was passed and signed into law, designating the third week of August as a week to appreciate coal miners.

People across the state are being asked to appreciate coal miners this week by thanking miners or sending letters applauding their hard work.

"I think when they see one, they should go up and shake his hand even if he just came out of the mines. I thank them every day they come into my office," said Haven King, President of Coal Mining Our Future.

Coal mining officials say the Commonwealth needs this week to focus on what these miners do for the entire state.

"It just means a lot that we spend some time, those of us especially outside the coal fields, thanking our miners for their hard work, their dedication, and literally keeping the lights on here in Kentucky," said Bill Bissett, President of the Kentucky Coal Association.

The purpose of this bill was to highlight, support, and applaud the men and women who work in coal mines every day.

"To show your appreciation, you need to express it. A lot of times people won't take time to do that, but they should take the time to thank the coal miners for how they sacrifice," said King.

The Pike County Judge-Executive says 95 percent of electricity comes from coal in Kentucky 50 percent in the country.

"Our coal miners are the bravest people I know. They go into the vowels of these mountains. And the Lord put it in there. They put the coal there to be used for a quality of life," said Wayne T. Rutherford, Pike County Judge-Executive.

"If you've got electricity, you need to thank a miner," said King.

Officials say miners need all the recognition they can get.

Coal Miners' Appreciation Week continues through Saturday.
