BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The cold and wet winter has caused roads to slip in Bell County.

Roads crews are drilling steel into KY 1534 in Bell County. Officials say part of the road slipped and is not stable.

"We've had some unusually low temperatures and that's caused the ground to freeze at a deeper level than in the past, and the freezing and thawing and freezing and thawing at that level has caused problems," said Ben Barnett, Bell County Emergency Management Director.

State highway officials say the water next to the road also eroded some of its stability.

The section of road is temporarily closed while crews do the repair work.

"When you have a state route that's closed, that's going to prove to a bit of inconvenience," said Albey Brock, Bell County Judge-Executive.

This is not the only road with issues. Emergency Management officials say Highway 188 also has a slip. One lane is closed.

"The extra rain and snow and all that moisture is causing landslides and rockslides in places of steep terrain," said Barnett.

Now that the weather is finally nice, crews can get the road repair work done.

"It's a good time to take advantage of the weather we're supposed to have the next couple of days," said Les Dixon, Public Information Officer for Highway Department District 11.

Crews say once the steel beams are finished, then the road will be better.

"It will make everything safe," said Dixon.

They hope to have the work finished by Tuesday evening.

Bell County officials are unsure when Highway 188 will be repaired.
