College campus remained closed Friday after threat

WHITESBURG, Ky (WYMT) - Students did not attend class at a local college Friday.

On Thursday a student at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College's Whitesburg campus overheard other students complaining about not receiving financial aid and threatening to use guns.

Officials evacuated the campus and later made the decision to remain closed Friday while police investigated.

"Some may say we overreacted, but we don't think we did," said SKCTC President Dr. W. Bruce Ayers.

He says that in this day in time you can never under react to these type of threats.

"With violence so rampant, and gun violent in particular, we always air on the side of safety. We put our students and faculty and staff first," said Dr. Ayers.

He says he wanted to keep the school closed until police could contact those responsible for the threat.

"We will make a decision as to whether or not charges need to be pressed against them, and at this time we think we will be charging them with terroristic threatening," said Dr. Ayers.

The Whitesburg campus is expected to be back open Monday.

Dr. Ayers says it does cost the school money to close the campus, but he says it is worth it.
