Commercial air service could start at the Pikeville-Pike County Regional Airport next year.
the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the airport a $750,000 Small Community Air Service Development Grant that the city needed to start commercial service.
An unidentified commercial airline service has committed to locating at the airport if the city received the grant.
Pikeville city officials say the next part is making improvements at the airport and installing the TSA security at the terminal.
City Manager Donovan Blackburn said, "Leaps of ahead of where we were before, and everybody is really excited. I really feel within the year's time, you're going to see commercial air service at the Pikeville-Pike County Regional Airport."
Officials say they still need about one million dollars to start the commercial service.
Blackburn says Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and Congressman Hal Rogers are working to get more grant money.
