JACKSBORO, Tenn. (WYMT/WVLT) -Teens should be concerned with boys and prom, not chemo and radiation. A Campbell County teen has been battling cancer for two years. She found out her disease is now terminal. Now the whole town is coming together to make her last wishes come true.
Katelyn Norman went to St. Jude's this past weekend ready to cure her cancer. When the 15-year-old got there -- she learned it spread to her heart and pelvis. Christy Bailey says, "No parent is supposed to bury a child before you. So it's not fair."
Christy's son, Devin has battled cancer his whole life. He and Katelyn share a special bond. That's why he and his mom are helping Katelyn fulfill the wish list she posted on Facebook. The first thing on her list -- to go to prom.
School Nurse Sharon Shepherd says, "She said she wouldn't be here for her prom and said is there any way we could do that and I said absolutely."
They're having the prom at The Stables and the theme is "Katelyn in the Sky with Diamonds" and they're wanting it to be energetic, a celebration of Katelyn's life. Sharon Shepherd says, "Katelyn is very sassy and full of life. She's very energetic. That's what we're making the prom to be."
Katelyn's other wishes include a first dance, a first kiss, a motorcycle ride and a trip to Italy.
Katelyn's friends hung up posters at the high school Thursday saying they're praying for Katelyn. Her friends will be at prom. Bailey says, "Kate's just a special girl. She's touched our hearts. She's so brave."
Shepherd says, "I've watched her grow up. She's never one to sit back and give up. She's a fighter the whole way.'
Katelyn wrote on her Facebook, "So yes it's true. The beginning of the end of my days. My cancer has spread. Thank you to everyone who is making my bucket list come true."
After the prom, they're asking people to come out and line the street with candles. There's a Facebook page with more information. Search for "Light the Night for Kate".
If you would like to contribute money to help with Katelyn's wish list, there's an account open at Y-12 Credit Union.
