Consumer Healthcare group spends big in Frankfort

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Consumer Healthcare Products
Association has set a record for the most money spent by a lobbying
organization during a Kentucky legislative session.

The Legislative Ethics Commission reported Friday that the group
spent $457,000 from January through March at a time when lawmakers were considering making some over-the-counter cold and allergy medications available by prescription only.

The organization opposed the legislation intended to help curb
methamphetamine production.

It passed only after lawmakers changed it to allow people to buy
roughly two packages of the medications per month or up to seven
packages per year without a prescription. People who need more than that would have to get a prescription.

The Legislative Ethics Commission said lobbyists and their
employers spent $7.1 million overall during the first three months
of the year.
