Contests to feature simulated mine disaster

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Coal miners, safety officials and industry employees are meeting in Lexington this week for the Kentucky State Mine Rescue contests.

The event Wednesday through Friday is coordinated by the University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering, and 57 mine rescue teams from 10 states are competing.

The idea is to simulate an actual underground mine disaster in order to keep rescue teams skills sharp.

The contests are open to the public and start each day at 8 a.m. EDT at Lexington Convention Center Heritage Hall.
