Cooling centers in Pike County opened last Friday and officials say they will stay open since many do not have power and it's going to stay hot.

Thousands of folks are without power and hundreds without water which has many seeking refuge.

Cooling centers provide folks the bare necessities of food, water and shelter which means a lot to those who currently have very little.

No power also means no air-conditioning, which can be downright dangerous in 100 degree heat.

Organizers say the amount of folks using the centers isn't as high as originally anticipated.

But organizers say regardless of the number of people that come in, they're glad to provide the services to the public.

All senior centers and some community centers are being used as cooling centers.

The centers are open from 11 to 5.
