Corbin food pantry finds itself in need

Posted: Wed 11:53 PM, Nov 21, 2012

CORBIN, Ky, (WKYT) - It hasn’t taken long for almost all the food at a Corbin food bank to be taken.

“The economy and jobs. Losing jobs in the area,” said Grace on the Hill Food Pantry director Everett Shakleton of why 11,000 people in the area are considered below the poverty level.

More than 230 people were served during the recent Thanksgiving holiday distribution.

“We typically serve 380 families a month,” said Shakleton

More than 80 families are expected to pick up food again Monday and Shakleton is concerned not a can or box of food will be left.

“All of us are hurting. The food is not available. The government commodities are cut way back. About half comes from the commodity programs,” he said.

The food pantry accepts donations at their Grace on the Hill Church location, or at Betty’s Flowers on Main Street.
