Corbin grandmother pleads not guilty to leaving child at McDonald's

CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - A grandmother, accused of leaving a 4-year old child at a Corbin McDonald's, went before a judge on Tuesday morning.

Joann Lowe's appearance before District Judge Kathy Prewitt lasted only a few seconds. Her attorney entered a not guilty plea for her and another court date was set.

Her attorney tells WKYT that Lowe is a good person and says the whole thing was blown out of proportion.

Police say Lowe's great-grandson, whom Lowe has custody of, was left behind when Lowe and other relatives were at the Corbin McDonald's. Employees found the boy, named Kevin, and called police. The police then sent his picture to WKYT and posted it on social media sites. Other Relatives recognized the picture and came and picked up the boy at the police station.

Relatives told police that there was confusion on who was supposed to be taking Kevin with them. Her attorney says the Lowe actually left the restaurant to go to church.

Kevin remains with other family members. On the day after the incident, Lowe's pastor told WKYT that because of a mandatory check up ordered by social services, doctors discovered that the boy had a heart murmur. The pastor says that the family would not have known about the condition had it not been for this incident.

Lowe will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on March 19th.
