Corbin teacher awarded Kentucky Teacher of the Year

CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) - It's an honor most educators never dream of, but Kristal Doolin has been named the 2013 Kentucky Teacher of the Year.

Doolin says she is overwhelmed by the honor.

"With so many awesome teachers in the state, for me to be singled out and recognized makes me very very proud," she says.

But she doesn't work alone. Doolin says the whole school district works together to educate students.

"And you know I credit our district for being so forward thinking with the technology aspect. That really brings a lot to the classroom and allows you to connect with our students because they're 21st century learners."

Doolin says technology is changing the way students learn in the classroom.

"We have a Bring Your Own Device policy, so they bring their own iPhones and iPads and things like that to the classroom, and at their seats they're online."

Faculty and staff at Corbin Middle School say with Doolin's passion for teaching, it's no wonder she won the award. The school's principal says the achievement speaks volumes about her abilities.

"We have some wonderful teachers around our state, and so I knew the competition had to be stiff, but she is going to be an amazing representative for the State of Kentucky in the National Teacher of the Year award," said principal Ramona Davis.

Doolin says the whole experience has been unreal. She says most of all, she has her students to thank.
