It's a new year for Mike Phillips and with that comes a new job in a new state. Phillips, a South Carolina native, says he found the city manager job online but how he made his decision to apply was a little unconventional.
"I kind of drew a circle around Greenville (South Carolina) and said ok this is how far I am willing to go and Corbin fell right in that circle."
Phillips has held positions as a city administrator and county manager but his most recent was as a city manager in Georgia, making him a qualified choice.
And although he has only been in his position for four days, Phillips says he already has some things in mind that he wants to build on; one of those things is tourism.
"Corbin really impressed me it has a little bit of everything here." Phillips says.
That versatility combined with the fact the city sets right along an interstate allows Phillips to envision Corbin as a potential stop for tourist.
"When they do drive through town they can say we need to stop at that restaurant or coffee shop or whatever."
Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney says he is very pleased with everything Phillips is bringing to the table.
"He seems like he will be fair but firm."
And also a good fit for Corbin's southern ways McBurney adds.
Mayor Mcburney says there were 65 applicants for the position of city manager.
