SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) - Geologists have found oil under Wolf Creek Dam.
The discovery of small amounts of crude came during an ongoing project to stop leaks in the long earthen dam that impounds Lake Cumberland in southern Kentucky.
Corps of Engineers geologist Brook Brosi said a core sample drilled in the dam brought up the discovery, according to the Commonwealth Journal. Brosi says there isn't a significant amount of oil down there. A relief well drilled a few years earlier found about 12 gallons of oil.
Brosi says there are no producing oil wells in Russell County, where the dam is located, but crude is being pumped in nearby Clinton County
The project to stabilize the dam has been under way for about two years.
