Victim's name released in deadly Whitley County crash

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - CORBIN, Ky. (WYMT) - A two vehicle crash in Whitley County killed one man and sent three others to the hospital. Police say they were more than likely an out-of-town family on their Memorial Day vacation.

Rhonda Wilder's house overlooks Cumberland Falls Highway, and she says she's seen many wrecks from her front yard.

“Every summer you know it's coming. We have a few wrecks in the winter time but summer is bad with the traffic coming off of the lake,” said Wilder.

And she saw yet another one Sunday afternoon.

“The car was demolished. All the airbags, front and side airbags had been deployed, and you knew someone had been hurt really bad,” said Wilder.

The Whitley County Coroner says 42-year-old Kevin Haack died in the crash.
His 47-year-old sister, her 17-year-old daughter, who was driving and a 10-year-old whose relation is unknown were also injured, and were flown to different hospitals.

Police say that members of Greenland Baptist Church across the street heard the accident happen during the service.

They say that dozens of them went to help the victims until first responders arrived.

Police say a service truck was driving southbound on Cumberland Falls Highway when a four door car pulled out in front of it. They think it was a family from Indiana in town for the holiday.

“They had other family members in different vehicles that were near the collision. They didn't see it happen, but they were near. They were all in the area, I guess vacationing at Luarel Lake.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident, and no other names have been released.

The Whitley County Coroner says Haack was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
