BIG FORK, Ky. (WYMT) – A Leslie County couple says they are overrun with dogs and are asking the community for help.

It is believed more than 70 dogs live at the Adams home in Big Fork, but nobody knows for sure.

Police visited the home Thursday to check their conditions.

They say even though most look healthy, if new homes are not found for the dogs, they could be forced to take action.

When a deputy responded to a complaint there Wednesday night, he was a little overwhelmed.

“I've never seen that many dogs in one residence in that little smalll confined area,” said Deputy Sam Mullins, of the Leslie County Sheriff’s office.

Home owner Tommy Adams says he has nearly 45 dogs in the yard, 20 on the porch and 7 inside.

And those dogs kept the deputy from even seeing what was inside Wednesday night.

“And I just refused to go in the residence. We took care of what we needed to there and walked back out,” said Mullins.

Adams’ wife tells us that dozens of their dogs have killed each other, and the scar on her leg shows the pain they've caused her as well.

“I'm scared to go outside, and if you do you have to have a big stick or they bite you,” said Aundrea Adams.

Adams says what started as a way to help the dogs quickly got out of control.

“I started picking up strays and went from about 5 pups and a mother to about 70 I believe that's what I've got,” said Adams.

He is now asking the community for help.

“It's more than I can afford. I really need some help,” said Adams.

He says he has reached out to shelters but only one rescue group has agreed to help.

Officials at the Barnyard Boutique in Hazard plan to remove a few dogs from the home at a time.

They are in the process of finding enough foster homes for the dogs, but don’t expect to start moving the animals until later in the month.
