A Magoffin County couple accused of killing a child appeared in court.
42 year old James Garcia and 23 year old Cindee Collins are charged with manslaughter for the death of Garcia's four year old son, Cameron Bryce Mullins, last year.
Thursday, both Garcia and Collins pleaded not guilty.
Four year old Cameron Bryce Mullins died two days before Christmas last year. The deputy coroner says the autopsy shows he had a severe head injury and other bruising.
Officials say Garcia and his girlfriend, Cindee Collins, were caring for the boy at the time. A Magoffin County grand jury indicted them on manslaughter charges earlier this month.
"Anybody that knows him, knows he would never, ever hurt a child. He's innocent. When the child was injured, it has been proven he was at work," said Judy Garcia, mother of James Garcia.
Collins' family also says she did not kill the child.
"I can't say who done it and who didn't. It's not my verdict, but in my heart, I know Cindee's innocent. She loved kids. Just time will tell and hopefully, it will all be over," said Kathy Brown, sister of Cindee Collins.
The public defender entered not guilty pleas for both Garcia and Collins.
The assistant commonwealth's attorney did not want to comment on the case at this time.
Garcia's family says they are still grieving over losing four year old Cameron and are now preparing for the court process.
"I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. It's horrible," said Judy Garcia.
The couple will be back in court on February 20th.
Bond is $250,000 cash for both Garcia and Collins. The public defender requested a lower bond, and the assistant commonwealth's attorney opposed a lower bond. Judge Kim Childers will review the motion.
