Crews battle flames in Jackson County

Forestry officials are hoping they can get a Jackson County fire contained

JACKSON County, Ky. (WYMT) - Forestry officials are hoping they can get a Jackson County fire contained. So far, it's burned through more than 700 acres, most of that in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

This weather we've all been enjoying isn't necessarily what forest rangers want to see. They say, "There have been ideal fire conditions for probably the last four or five days now,"

Warm temperatures, low humidity, and a strong breeze add up to a significant fire danger. Rangers say, "It starts really easily and it spreads really quickly,"

Since last Wednesday, fire has destroyed more than 700 acres of forest in Jackson County, and it's still spreading. Ranger Jason Nedlo of the US Forest Service says, "This is pretty big for this area. Probably going to be around 750 acres by the time it's all said and done,"

They hope to have it contained this afternoon, but the area could feel its effects even after it's been put out. Officials say all of the ash can run in to the creeks and waterways if there is a big rain. They say it can potentially alter the quality of the water.

Officials add, even though it could be contained by Monday afternoon, parts of the forest that have already burned could smolder for weeks.

Rangers say the fire is not threatening any home, but there are other fires burning in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Monday the Kentucky State Forestry Division was on the scene in Bath and Menifee Counties.

As of Monday afternoon a 30 acre fire was burning and still growing near Olympia in Bath County, and at least four acres have burned near Cave Run Lake in Menifee County. That fire has destroyed at least two structures.
