Crews repairing Clay County roads

Officials in one eastern Kentucky county say the rain and snow this year has taken a toll on their roads.

They say drivers could be in danger.

Crews in Clay County are patching up the roads so cars can get around, but more rain could mean more problems.

Bridges are falling, creeks are overflowing and roads are deteriorating across the county.

The road supervisor showed me one section of Beech Creek Road outside of Manchester that is slipping off the mountain.

Road Supervisor Buford Jarvis says crews have spread gravel on breaks across the county.

"It's full of potholes, we've got roads breaking off and water's washing out the bridges next to the creeks," said Jarvis.

"All the snow we had at the first of the year. After two of half months of snow, the rest of it's been rain," said Judge Executive Joe Asher.

Asher says he has answered hundreds of calls concerning the roads.

Several have complained about this break outside of Manchester, where this section of the highway has slipped two or three feet down the hill.

Jarvis says crews tried to pack more gravel on the road, the break just sank lower. He says there is a chance the road could collapse.

"If we get more rain and it soaks the mountain like it's been doing, it possibly could," said Jarvis.

Asher said he wants to try and fix every road the weather has affected.

"We would like to get everything done, but it's gonna be a while," said Asher.

With more rain in the forecast, he is worried the finished repairs could be washed away.

Asher says the county has spent thousands of dollars on road repairs this spring. He says FEMA was in the area last week to look at damage.
