Cumberland dealing with debt issues

Posted: Thu 9:31 AM, Sep 08, 2011

The city of Cumberland held a special council meeting Tuesday night to deal with mounting debt issues.

The city owes the Department of Rural Water just more than $90,000.

The mayor says they had to float money from one account to another, so they could make a substantial payment on that debt.

"We had money in the other accounts, but we didn't have enough money in the actual water account to pay some more for some major bills that were coming in," said Carl Hatfield, Cumberland Mayor.

Hatfield said the city will continue paying on the debt.

He attributes the money problems to the city's previous mayor.
