A fun afternoon with some friends turned tragic. Investigators say a 16-year-old has died after being thrown off his ATV, which then landed on him.
The crash happened late Monday afternoon on Pine Grove School Road in Laurel County near London.
The young man identified by the Laurel County Coroner as 16-year-old Andrew Gregory had been separated from his friends for about 15 minutes when investigators say those friends began to get worried and went looking for him. "I can't even imagine his friends finding him in an accident such as this," Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Gilbert Acciardo said.
Investigators say Gregory had driven a short distance away from his friends when he lost control of the 4-wheeler and crashed. "Looks like he hit a bank," Acciardo said, "and it looks like it hit another bank on the other side of the road, or the trail, and apparently while he was trying to get control of it, it probably threw him off and landed on top of him."
Acciardo says by the time Gregory's two friends found him, it was too late. "The bike was on top of him. They got him out from under the bike, and he was dead."
The death investigation will continue, but Acciardo says at this point there is no reason to suspect any foul play. "These are big machines," Acciardo said, "You don't have anything around you like you do in a motor vehicle where you can strap yourself in, and if it overturns, you're gonna get hurt. If it lands on top of you you're gonna get hurt, so just be extremely careful."
The coroner tells us Gregory died at the scene of blunt force trauma to the chest.
