HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - One of the least talked about issues on the campaign trail this year is education - specifically whether the government should provide vouchers or tax breaks to parents who send their kids to private school.

When Republicans and Democrats released their party platforms at their respective conventions, there was a subtle difference on education.

The GOP platform supports vouchers and tax incentives for parents who send their kids to private school. The Democratic platform talks about strengthening America's education system without specifically mentioning vouchers.

"I think if you look at the Republican platform and the Democratic platform, you probably don't see a whole lot of difference in choice," said Dr. Terry Holliday, Kentucky's commissioner of education. "I think choice is very important. Parents have to buy in to their child's education. They've got to be involved. They've got to be engaged. And sometimes when they have a few choice options, it could work."

Grace Henderson's three children are all products of the private school system. She also teaches at a private school.

"I think it would give parents more choices," henderson said. "I see lots of parents that have come and interviewed and wish they could put their child in the same environment, but don't have that choice."

Critics of private school vouchers argue they take money away from public schools at a time when school budgets are already extremely tight.

Currently Kentucky does not have a private school choice program.
