An over-the-phone debit card scam is leaving many people concerned and confused. People are receiving calls on their cell phones from an unavailable number. It is an automated voice telling them their debit card needs to be reactivated and they need to type in their debit card number to fix it. Unfortunately not everyone knew this was a scam.

Banks in the area received hundreds of calls over the past few days regarding a debit card scam.

"They had been receiving automated calls that their debit card had been deactivated they were requested to press the number one and provide certain information about their card," said Janice Brafford-King of Community Trust Bank.

"It said press one again so I pressed one again to reactivate the card and at that point it said to enter my debit card number and at that point, I just hung up," said Dennis Hudson, a victim of the scam.

Even people at the bank got the scamming call.

"As we were standing in the lobby discussing it, my cell phone rang and it was the people calling and it comes up unavailable number," said Pat Miller of People's Bank.

"That right there was the first warning that it was not legitimate, but not thinking and just thinking about having to use my debit card , they almost tricked me," said Hudson.
But not everyone knew it was a scam.

"Several people have put their number in but they contacted us and we have hot carded their card so that no one can use it," Miller explained.

Bank officials say you need to be cautious.

"I would advise no one to give out their debit number over the phone at any time, especially through a recording," said Miller.

If you did give out your information, contact your bank immediately. Police say at this time, there isn't much they can do about the scam because they haven't received any personal calls reporting it.
