December 21: Is it the end?

December 21st, 2012--the date some say the world will end.

"It's a combination of one part of the Mayan calendar coming to an end and some supposed planet that's supposed to hit us," said Director of the East Kentucky Science Center Steve Russo.

It has been a hot topic for a long time. There have even been blockbuster movies made about it, like the 2009 Columbia Pictures film '2012', but scientists at the East Kentucky Science Center say there is no logical reasoning behind the predictions.

"The calendar on my wall or in your kitchen comes to an end on December 31 every year so you just go out and buy a new calendar. It's not the end of the world," said Russo.

They also say there is no reason to believe the theories of a planetary collision.

"You got half a million amateurs that would have found this thing in telescopes already, so there's no planet coming here," said Russo.

Scientists say this is not the first time they have dealt with doomsday predictions, and they say it will not be the last.

"Honestly if this was going to happen i'd probably be in a bunker someplace and wouldn't be here talking to you about it," said Russo.

But the question remains: Do people believe the predictions? Well, none that we talked to.

"I think most people think it's just a laugh," said Shawn Hopkins.

"The good lord above is the only one that knows when this is gonna happen. I think it's just the beginning," said Billy Kinney.

"It's not the end of the world and it's not the end of us dealing with the end of the world," said Russo.

So they say for now it is safe to assume we will all be here December 22.
