Shannon Messer, 34, faces eleven charges.
Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Claude Hudson says he responded to a crash scene on Kentucky 11 at 7:30 Wednesday morning. He says Shannon Messer crossed the center line and hit another car head on. The deputy says Messer was under the influence of drugs.
"While we were doing the investigation, observed two child car seats in the rear of the car. Once I questioned the driver where her children was at, she said, 'I think they're at home,'" said Deputy Hudson.
He says he then went to the home, several miles from the crash scene on Nealie Branch Road. He says when he went inside, he heard a baby crying and found four girls, a three year old, one year old twins, and a three month old alone in the home.
He does not know how long the children were there with no supervision.
"She said she was coming back from seeing her husband who worked downtown there," Deputy Hudson said.
Deputy Hudson also says when he took Messer to the hospital, she tried to escape.
"Once we got her to the emergency room. She actually fled on foot from me. A chase was given, and she was captured," Deputy Hudson said.
He took Messer to jail after she was released from the hospital.
Messer's eleven charges include wanton endangerment, DUI, and fleeing and evading. Jail officials say she is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
The children are now in the custody of social services.
Deputies say the driver of the other car in the crash was injured and went to the hospital. The woman's name was not released.
