Rowan County Sheriff's deputies seized three dozen doses of fentanyl from a man they believe was selling it. Patients in extreme pain take fentanyl, often in a lollipop-looking dose. Deputies say the drug, if taken by anyone not prescribed it, can kill.
"We received a tip in our office that somebody had possession of some drugs and when we did our investigation which led us to the discovery of this fentanyl," recalled Chief Deputy Joe Cline. This is the first his undercover agents have seen, and he's afraid there could be more.
"We're hoping and praying that it's not a new type of drug that's gonna be hitting our streets."
The drug comes in patch, powder, and lollipop form. Doses look a lot like small suckers. Chief Deputy Cline says some will cut it up and mix it in with heroin to get a stronger dose, and just the smallest amount can kill.
"This is one of the most dangerous drugs that we've come across," one Chief Deputy Cline knows is 100 times more powerful than morphine, "We're just very concerned about people dying, using this."
The Rowan County Sheriff's Office will be sponsoring a prescription take-back day in April, giving everyone a chance to safely dispose of unwanted prescriptions.
