The city of Middlesboro kicked off its annual Fourth of July celebration Monday afternoon, but this year the circumstances are much different.
It was two weeks ago Monday when destructive flash flooding tore through the area, leaving feet of water standing in the city and hundreds of people flooded out of their homes. Folks gathered at the community center off 30th Street in Middlesboro Monday afternoon to celebrate the fourth and get their mind off the cleanup process.
"This is great. We needed a little bit of normalcy back in our lives and we needed to celebrate the Fourth of July," said Middlesboro Mayor Bill Kelley.
City leaders expected about 1,000 people at the event!
FEMA was in Middlesboro back in June to survey the damage.
