Some people in Johnson County walked laps for hours to raise awareness for domestic violence.

The Sandy Valley Abuse Center organized the ten hour walk at the Paintsville Recreation Center.

From 8:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening, the participants walked around the track.

Each step they took was in honor of a domestic violence victim in Eastern Kentucky.

"Somebody's a victim of domestic violence every minute of every day. It's constant, It doesn't matter how much money you have, where you live, your education, you know it crosses all the boundaries," said Program Coordinator Elizabeth Fitch.

The Sandy Valley Abuse Center helps about 100 domestic violence victims each year.

Case managers say this year, the number is increasing.

They believe there are more women and children victims of abuse but are too afraid to seek help.

Organizers hope public events like this will lead more victims to seek help.

If they see there's community support, people would be more willing or easier for them to come and talk to a friend or family member and they wouldn't feel so different," said Fitch.

"It lets them know there are options out there for them to get out. Let's them know there are places you can go and there's help. You don't have to stay in a domestic violence home," said Sandy Valley Abuse Center Case Manager Paula Howard.

They believe if just one person seeks help, then every step of the ten hour walk was worth it.

A walk to raise awareness in Prestonsburg will be October 5th at the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Campus

A walk in Pikeville will be October 12th at the Bob Amos Park.

Anyone seeking help from domestic violence can call the Sandy Valley Abuse Center at 1-800-649-6605.
