Arch Coal Company has laid off more than 100 eastern Kentucky miners.

An Arch spokesperson says the layoffs went into effect December 2nd.

37 positions at the Hazard mine, 42 at a Knott County mine, 33 in Breathitt County and 5 in Pike County were part of the layoffs.

Arch says the cutbacks became a necessity due to the needs of the company's customers.
