Dozens of new businesses and hundreds of new jobs are coming to Pikeville.
City Commissioners announced all the new plans during a meeting on Monday night.
Pikeville City Commissioners and a developer say a new 200,000 square foot shopping center is on the way. The strip mall to be built on Thompson Road will have dozens of new stores.
"He has well over half of the facilities already committed with deals he's working on to fill up the remaining facility," said City Manager Donovan Blackburn.
Leaders will not release the names of the stores committed, but say shoppers will be happy.
"Huge for this area, absolutely huge. Words can't describe what this will do to our retail business," said City Commissioner Jimmy Carter.
Part of the new shopping center will be built where the main Pikeville Post Office is. Officials say the post office will re-locate in a new space in the shopping center.
Plans were also unveiled for a new Hilton Garden Hotel to be built next to the Hampton Inn.
The eight story building will have 114 rooms, a restaurant, and outdoor event space on the rooftop.
"Creates opportunity to bring in conventions and other tourism things as well as being able to provide rooms for all the activities we have in the region which is just growing leaps and bounds," said Brad Hall with Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
Developers say once all of the new businesses are open, there will be 300 new jobs.
"That's phenomenal news! Creates larger tax base and creates great opportunity for our local economy," said Hall.
Commissioners also approved $175,000 dollars in tax incentives for coal company Alpha Natural Resources to locate its headquarters in Pikeville, bringing 60 new jobs.
It is not a done deal yet for Alpha Natural Resources to locate in Pikeville. The company still has to finalize a deal with the building's owner to move there.
