EKCEP to offer new initiative for laid off miners

HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - The Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP) is starting a new initiative called "HOME."

"Helping Our Miners Everyday" aims to train miners for new careers through skilled apprenticeships and on the job training.

It is also available for their spouses.

Officials say this is the most important time in recent history to be able to provide this service for coal miners.

"They have for years done what they needed to do to keep the lights on for the country, so it's important that our agency react to the downturn in the industry," said Michael Cornett with EKCEP.

Sign-ups for the program will be held Wednesday, December 12th at the Perry County Job Sight; Monday, December 17th at the Pikeville Campus of the Big Sandy Community and Technical College; and Wednesday, December 19th at the Harlan Extension Office Depot.
