PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - An eastern Kentucky medical school is ranked one of the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
The University of Pikeville took 5th place in rural medicine rankings, tied with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Minnesota.
UPIKE is the highest ranked college of osteopathic medicine.
The school ranked 12th last year.
"We're such a young med school, and we're tucked away here in the mountains of east Kentucky. So to have a school that's only had 12 graduating classes rise to that level of rankings I think is really remarkable, and we're very proud of it," said KYCOM Dean Boyd Buser, D.O.
U.S. News also ranks UPIKE second for percentage of graduates who enter primary care residencies.
