PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT)- The students inside this classroom at Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Mayo Campus are learning about the latest technology to be the next generation’s electricians.

“If we don’t do our jobs, then in turn they can’t do their job and that’s going to be a reflection,” Instructor Charles Vanhoose said.

For second year student Jared Goforth, it was the hands-on approach that drew him to the career.

“It’s a lot harder than I envisioned it would be, but I like it,” Jared said.

Jared, 20, has already been making a living with his hands for years.

“I listened to Bluegrass and Gospel with my grandparents and had wanted a banjo for Christmas and they got me a plug banjo and the next few days, I was learning how to play it,” Jared added.

Jared also sells produce from his nine gardens on his family farm, on Fluty Lick outside of Inez, at local farmers markets and uses a 1953 tractor that he completely refurbished or a horse-drawn plow.

“That’s how I bought most of my instruments, selling at farmers markets,” Jared said.

He also raises pigs and chickens and is in the process of converting an old cellar on his property into a smokehouse.

But around here, Jared is known for pickin’ on his banjo.

“I told him, ‘Jared, I’ve bought a banjo, I know nothing about it, can you point me in the right direction,’ he said, ‘yeah, we should be able to take care of that,’” Vanhoose added.

In May, Jared will graduate with his Associate’s Degree along with 11 credentials in the electric power industry that will help him land his next job.

But no matter what the future holds for Jared, he will continue to do what he loves.

Jared performs with his band called Black Powder Express at festivals throughout the summer.
