With funding in place, officials say "The City of Hope" has the potential to overcome unhealthy stereotypes.

Clay County is one of the 133 places to receive this money.

Clay County is one of ten communities this year to receive an ACHIEVE grant from the Centers for Disease Control.

"We're always looking for communities like Manchester that really demonstrate a kind of great capacity and an ability to take this funding and to really bring together the right people and kind of push it forward," said Alice Patty, an ACHIEVE Project Consultant.

Clay County received the funding back in February.

"We have already worked with the highway department to do some more visible stripping at the park. That's a wonderful outcome that we already have," said Rhonda Bowling, a health educator.

ACHIEVE grants seek to empower communities to promote healthy policies.

The funding is meant to be used to prevent chronic diseases.

"We would like to see the healthy choice be the easy choice, and that's sort of built into the environment," said Bowling.

And with the public's input, officials hope to bring the community together in this effort.

100 people in Clay County were surveyed about the biggest issues in the area and what healthy assets are already available.

"I think there's a lot kind of on the verge of really being able to expand out to be really inclusive. But I mean I think there's a tremendous amount of assets now," said Patty.

Officials say the area has great potential and the right people to move the three-year project forward.

Officials plan to create a "Healthy Clay" by promoting physical activity, nutrition, and non-tobacco use.
