HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - The US Postal Service will soon stop delivering letters on Saturdays.

Postal officials announced the move Wednesday as a means of saving money for the agency, which is suffering financially.

"Once this is fully implemented it will save the postal service over $2 billion a year," USPS Kentuckiana District spokesman David Walton said. "Right now we could use that because last year alone in our fiscal year we lost $15.9 billion."

Packages will still be delivered on Saturdays. Post offices that are normally open on Saturdays will stay that way.

Some of the customers WYMT talked to at the Hazard Post Office said the cancellation of Saturday letter delivery will not affect them that much, but others said it will be greatly missed.

"This is the only place I use," customer Ella Mcintosh said. "It won't affect me that much because I can come to the post office like five days a week or whatever."

Another customer, Bruce Stephens, said, "I've kept up pretty well with the postal service's condition and they are in very bad shape. They have to cut back. They have to reduce costs and they have to do it soon."

The changes will take effect the week of August 5. If you have your medicine delivered in the mail, you will still get it on Saturdays.

"It will hurt a lot of people because a lot of important mail comes on Saturday," customer Dan Bailey said. "And if they don't run then you don't get your mail like it's supposed to be."

The postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage and other products to fund its operations.
