JACKSON, Ky. (WYMT) - Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday is recommending the state take over the Breathitt County School District.
Spokeswoman Lisa Gross told said the decision was made after an audit by state officials.
“We implemented a management audit in that district and the results of that audit indicated to the commissioner that it was appropriate to recommend to the state board that the district become state managed,” Gross said.
Earlier this year, Auditor Adam Edelen released another audit of finances for the school system.
That audit found former superintendent Arch Turner modified the calendar last year, omitting ten instructional days.
Officials say the district paid teachers more than $500,000 for days they did not work.
