Emergency Management Command Center monitors changing weather conditions

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - It takes numerous agencies on days like Friday to keep everyone safe. An important aspect of keeping everyone safe is the Emergency Management Command Center.

Officials with Emergency Management in Pike County say Friday's weather situation was an odd one but all main roads are passable and that is thanks to them keeping a close eye on the constantly changing weather conditions.

Pike County Public Information Director explains, "We are getting layered with snow, then freezing rain, and now snow again."

The Emergency Management Director in Pike County, Doug Tackett, explains what his office does is situations like this, "On days like this we monitor the weather and road conditions. We are in communication with our first responders so we can hear if they are out on wrecks or if they are having problems with ice or things of that nature."

In the emergency management command center officials use an interactive map in which they can talk directly with the weather service and other emergency management officials across the region.

Officials say they meet several times a day is situations like these. Roberts says, "We coordinate information we need to get out to the public."

This was vital in Friday's situation and why officials say no major weather related issues have been reported. Tackett says, "Today has been kind of slow...not a lot even with the freezing precipitation, snow, and sleet we have had. It has been fairly slow all day."

Emergency Management officials will continue to monitor the weather conditions and stay in contact with first responders and road crews to make sure everyone is staying safe.
